Sankofa: African American Music Education

Manuscript Submission Deadline: April 1, 2021

There is a marked absence of African American narratives in mainstream historical accounts of American music education. This special issue seeks to redress this reality and move toward a more inclusive accounting of the past. Sankofa: African American Music Education focuses on narratives of African American music education across the centuries. Sankofa is a word from the Twi language of the Akan people in Ghana that translates to ‘go back and fetch and take,’ its meaning captured in the image of a bird flying forward with its head turned backward and an egg in its mouth symbolizing wisdom from the past to inform the future. Scholarship informing the place of music education in African American thought and culture, and the inclusion and representation of African Americans in American music education has the potential to generate funds of knowledge and wisdom to enlighten and right the course of music education.

We invite original, rigorous research submissions on historical topics related to African American music education in the United States, from antebellum America through the Civil Rights Movement. Topics may include but are not limited to:

  • role of music transmission in the lives of the enslaved
  • formal and informal music teaching and learning
  • impact of federal and state laws on music in schooling
  • appropriation of African American music in public schools
  • representation of African Americans in materials for music instruction
  • groups and organizations of African American music educators
  • music programs in segregated K-12 schools
  • preparation of music teachers in institutions serving African Americans
